Driving opportunities for our community

Driving opportunities for our community

Learning to drive is an essential skill that we carry and continue developing throughout life. And, the benefits are substantial. Not only does it help open opportunities for career advancement and financial stability, but it also fosters confidence, independence and a sense of freedom. It helps people to be more social and feel connected in their community by giving them a means to travel quickly and conveniently.

This can make a huge difference to someone’s life, especially in regional areas like the Central Coast where public transportation is limited. For example, imagine the anxiety of getting to a job interview when you’re relying on several modes of public transportation that need to run perfectly on time. Or, needing to visit a relative in hospital on short notice who lives on the other side of the Coast.

For many people, getting their licence is a defining moment in their lives where they move from being dependent to living independently and creating a path for themselves.

That’s why our social enterprise will support a Learner Driver Program which is made possible by our parent company, Pacific Link Housing

In partnership with the NRMA Safer Driving School Central Coast, Pacific Link Housing provides successful tenants with 10 fully subsidised professional driving lessons led by a certified instructor. Throughout the lessons, tenants learn essential road safety skills, enhance their confidence on the road, and gain logbook credits to put towards their provisional driver’s licence.

This training and development opportunity is often the key to newfound freedom and success.

Meet Jules, Learner Driver Program recipient

Jules is a young program recipient who recently completed his 10 professional lessons which gave him the skills, knowledge and confidence to gain his provisional driving licence on his first attempt. As well as being a nervous driver, Jules’ mother could not afford to pay for professional driving lessons and therefore was unable to provide the support that Jules needed to get his Ps. Luckily, Jules was able to receive assistance through Pacific Link Housing’s Learner Driver Program.

Once Jules received his licence, he gained independence and had the opportunity to look for a job. He quickly secured a pizza delivery driver role at Pizza Inn. Today Jules is still on the road, but he’s now providing essential services, including delivering flowers to hospitals, nursing villages, and residential homes across the Central Coast. Having the means to drive has enabled Jules to remain employed during the various lockdowns throughout the last few years.

“It meant a lot to me to be part of this program and to be able to financially support myself and contribute to my family,” said Jules.

Key2 Realty’s Licensee in Charge, Peter Alward, is particularly proud of the positive impact that the Program has had. “We are so honoured to contribute to these success stories,” he said. “Our social enterprise provides expert property management services for the purpose of supporting local community members like Jules.”
